Did you know the you can file a “whistleblower” case under the “False Claims Act” which allows an insider to file a sealed lawsuit on behalf of the People of the United States against any company or organization that defrauds the government or public at large? If you’ve never heard of this before then be sure to tune in this Sunday evening at 10:30 when Al is joined by one of the few attorneys in America to win such a case, Brian Mahany. It was Mahany and his firm who took on the Country Wide Financial organization and his whistleblower client reaped millions in reward.
[Listen now to the 29 minute interview with Attorney Brian Mahany on WICN, Massachusetts Public Radio. Get the answers to all your questions on this fact filled interview. Included is a discussion on how ordinary Americans with inside information about corporate greed and corruption can earn their own reward.
Anyone with inside information about a company or business defrauding the government can seek a reward of between 15% and 30% of whatever the government collects from the wrongdoer. Considering the law allows the government to collect triple damages and levy high fines, rewards are often huge.
Rewards typically are only paid to the first to file so whatever you do, don’t delay.
Worried about retaliation? Congress added tough new anti-retaliation and worker protection provisions into the law. If you boss finds out that you are a whistleblower, you could receive double damages (typically lost wages), future wages and even legal fees.
