Today’s CNN Money had an interesting headline, “Americans fear a life of dead-end crap jobs with crap wages.” It’s not the kind of headline one expect from CNN but the message certainly rings true for many. People are nervous, worried and feel like they are one step away from financial ruin. That thinking is probably why so many folks are drawn to Bernie Sanders and Donald Trump. (Another quote from the article described this year’s presidential election as “picking the cleanest turd out of the bunch.”)
A major thrust of the article is the growing disparity between the have’s and the have not’s. It is also the demise of the American dream. Fortunately, I have one of the best jobs in the world – representing heroes and helping them fight corruption and corporate greed.
The ideal of the American dream may be fading for some, but David can still fight Goliath and win. For me, that means representing a whistleblower who decides to take on Bank of America or some other giant company.
Why on earth would anyone want to do such a thing? Because it is the right thing to do. Just like voters are getting fed up with tired old politicians and politics as usual, workers are getting fed up working their buns off while crooked managers steal from taxpayers, rip off patients and cheat on their taxes. Instead of going to the polls and “picking the cleanest turd,” they are becoming whistleblowers.
If doing the right thing isn’t enough motivation, the hundreds of millions paid each year in whistleblower awards is more than anyone could want.
Whistleblower awards? It’s true. In 2014 the U.S. Department of Justice paid out over $435,000,000.00 in whistleblower awards.
False Claims Act and Whistleblower Awards
To qualify for an award, you need original (inside) information about fraud against the government, the IRS or a bank. Knowledge of foreign bribery and cooked books works too.
Corporate fraudsters survived for years because most workers weren’t willing to make waves. Times have certainly changed. With triple damages and huge civil penalties, million dollar awards are common.
Under the False Claims Act, awards are based as a percentage of whatever the government collects from wrongdoers. The percentages range from 15% to 30%. The IRS and SEC whistleblower programs have similar ranges.
Don’t sit in a dead end job and allow corrupt businesses to walk over their own employees, the public and taxpayers. Become a whistleblower. We will do all the heavy lifting. The hardest part of the journey is just taking that first step.
