Normally our blog posts are full of helpful tax information or informative stories on asset recovery and fraud. Today’s is one of sheer stupidity. Meet Norma Coronel, a tax preparer from Los Angeles, California. Colonel was held without bail after being named in a 35 count tax evasion indictment.
While stories of tax preparers padding expenses or stealing from clients are nothing new, Coronel gets the Darwin award for one of the dumbest tax crimes of the year – claiming 19 kids all born on the same date as dependents. We have all heard of twins and triplets but 19 kiddos in 1 litter?
Coronel faces up to 143 years in prison if convicted. She also faces deportation; according to the U.S. Magistrate who ordered her detained, she is an illegal immigrant from Mexico.
Refund scams involving false credits and dependents are nothing new. The IRS can track social security numbers listed on returns. Trying to use a child on more than one return is a non starter that can get you and the return preparer in trouble. Although the government tends to criminally prosecute those evading $80,000 or more in taxes – the more you cheat, the greater the odds of getting prosecuted – the government does prosecute a fair number of refund scams each year no matter how small the tax loss.
