America – and the world – is in a mess. Our economy is teetering on the brink. Entire nations are on the verge of insolvency. Countries that celebrated “Arab spring” just a few short months ago with the toppling of dictators now find themselves fighting amongst themselves and on the brink of civil war. And at home, our political system appears beyond repair.
The Occupy Wall Street folks are pissed off but as of yet have failed to agree on any solutions. The Republicans and Democrats increasingly blame each other for the nation’s woes while millions remain on unemployment. Tens of millions of people in the world don’t even have enough food to eat.
We are living in a time when we are desperate for heroes… someone ready to ride to our rescue and fix all of our problems. While I am not confident that any one mortal can right all the world’s wrongs, America is full of heroes. And new ones are emerging every day.
Of course there will always be teachers, scientists, police officers, soldiers and doctors who are heroes. Some are recognized for their contributions or bravery while others work silently behind the scenes. The newest heroes, however, are the whistleblowers.
Seriously.
More and more people are coming forward now and helping America fix itself. We are on the verge of the great “reset.” It’s a wonderful time to be alive in this world.
How are whistleblowers heroes? They aren’t closing their eyes to all the corruption, mismanagement and fraud anymore. Victims of sexual abuse at the hands of churches and schools – some of them very powerful institutions like Penn State and the Roman Catholic Church. Medical billing clerks who report massive Medicare fraud. Bank workers and mortgage bankers who come and report massive fraud in the financial sector.
Courts are waking up and finally putting offenders in prison – and for a long, long time. Just five years ago the joke was how white collar offenders got a slap on the risk and a 6 month sentence to Club Fed. Ask Bernie Madoff how he is enjoying his 150 year sentence.
Concerned Americans are learning that courts will protect them when they come forward and report fraud and corruption. The federal false claims act has been on the books since the Civil War yet it is being used in a record number of cases two centuries later. Our firm represents the whistleblower in the largest false claims act case adopted by the government against the mortgage industry – a massive fraud in which the government seeks $2.4 billion from Allied Home Mortgage Corporation and its CEO Jim Hodge.
[Updated September 2017 – Allied lost at trial and was subsequently ordered to pay $296 million dollars. The Allied case was one of only two large lender cases to go to trial in the aftermath of the 2008 financial meltdown. It was a long road to get here but we won!]
While our law firm represents whistleblowers and fights fraud, we encourage everyone to become more involved. This is a rare opportunity to shape the future of our society. Now is your chance.
