A recently completed government survey of workers in Chicago, New York and Los Angeles revealed that “employment and labor laws are regularly and systematically violated.” The report found that in any week, approximately 1,100,000 workers in just those three cities were being cheated on their wages. Thats 10’s of millions of dollars in lost wages each and every week!
Violations included not receiving overtime pay, not receiving proper breaks, stealing of tips by supervisors and minimum wage violations, just to name a few. Of the few workers who complained, 43% said they were threatened or experienced retaliation.
The report also found that women and foreign born workers were more likely to be victims of illegal employment practices.
The government has pledged to hire 250 more investigators but with millions of violations occurring weekly, it may will take years to see results.
